Sustainability and values

'Monachyle Mhor recycles their food waste, cardboard, glass and plastics. The hotel’s heating and hot water are supplied by a biomass unit, the ashes form the burned wood pellets go to the garden, as well as used coffee granules. Water comes from a natural spring on the hill behind the hotel.

The Lewis family have lived and farmed in Balquhidder Glen for over 30 years and have employed local people in the hotel, garden and on the farm throughout this time. They prioritise buying from local suppliers as much as possible.'

Our story

Rob & Jean Lewis came to Monachyle Mhor in 1983 as farmers. Jean, who is blind, wanted to buy a bicycle for her son & decided to offer tea & scones to walkers. Being six miles along a single- track road it may not have been an obvious success... but it was.
